Born and brought up in Jorhat, studied Medicine in Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh. Served in the Indian Armed Forces Medical Corps as a Captain before emigrating to the UK in 1975. Worked at the University Hospital, Queen's Medical Centre in various capacities including Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Director before moving to the Rampton Hospital as a Clinical Director from where he retired in 2001. Alongside, he has been an active member at the Royal College of Psychiatrists as a member of the College Council, Chairman of the Trent Division of the College fnally taking office as a Deputy Registrar to the College. Provided an input into upgrading of Tezpur Mental Hospital (now known as Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Regional Mental Health Institute) although the final outcome of it is not known. Married with two grown up sons and two grand daughters Dr Baruah now lives in Nottingham.
